Iceland Road Conditions

Always check road conditions before driving in Iceland. Weather changes fast here, and what was a clear road this morning can be closed by afternoon. Here are the official sources we use ourselves.

🛣️

Vegagerðin (Road Administration)

The official source for road conditions in Iceland. Shows an interactive map with color-coded road status: green (easy), yellow (spots of ice), red (difficult), and closed. Updated continuously. This is what we check before every drive.

🛡️

SafeTravel.is

Run by ICE-SAR (Icelandic search and rescue). Shows active warnings, weather alerts, and safety notices. You can also file a travel plan here — if something goes wrong and you don't check in, rescue teams know where to look.

🌤️

Veður (Weather)

The Icelandic Met Office. Check forecasts, wind speed, and weather warnings. Wind is the biggest hazard for drivers in Iceland — it can literally push your car off the road or rip a door off its hinges. Yellow or orange wind warnings mean reconsider your drive.

F-Road Opening Dates

Highland (F-road) openings vary each year based on snow melt and conditions. Most open in late June or early July. Some popular routes like F35 to Kerlingarfjöll open earlier, while remote routes like F249 to Þórsmörk may open later. Check the official status before planning any highland drive.
